Amardeep Charitable Trust came into existence in 1993. Our trust is registered under "The Bombay Public Trusts Act 1950". The registration no is E-15065. Ever since its inception, the organization has worked in Mangaon Taluka of Raigad district in the state of Maharashtra ? India.

The area of our work has been empowering the tribal viz. "Katkaris". During its existence of the past twenty five years the organization has been addressing issues like women's empowerment, children's education, upliftment of tribal community, and sustainable development. The Geographical area covers 26 tribal villages of Mangaon Taluka. The location of our work area is 26 hamlets within the Mangaon area of 4 Gram Panchayats (Village units). There are total of fifty four (54) Gram Panchayats (Village units) in Mangaon Block with 186 hamlets and out of which only in 26 hamlets we can reach out, focusing basically on the "Katkari" tribals.

2. The Socio-economic Situation of the Katkari Tribals

Our service is focused on the Katkari tribal community. They are greatly vulnerable as they do not possess any land at all. They are at the mercy of money lenders and land owners and are greatly dependent on them for any need such as cultivation etc. They lack employment and livelihood opportunities. Their position is at the lowest strata of the social ladder. The level of migration is on the rise as they are oppressed by the land lords and lack sustainable source of income. When they migrate they tend to take entire family with them which results in children dropping out from the school. Due to migration elderly and widow are left behind in the village, they are unable to go for daily wages. Due to social stigma widows are looked down upon and are considered bad omen.

3. Our Objectives

a.      Empowerment of Katkari Tribals.
Halt migration and provide job opportunities.
Promote primary education to the tribal children, especially the girls.
Better health care for all.
Care and protection of the environment..       Networking with government organizations and NGOs.

 4. Works undertaken

At present we are committed to work for the Holistic development of the poor Katkari tribals through participatory, inclusive, and right based approach. Hostel facilities for tribal girls, agricultural livelihood for women, Training programmes on various topics like, women's rights, tribal rights etc. Regularizing government documents (Ration cards, Caste Certificates, Identity Cards, Income Certificate, etc.)

People of all age groups are catered to through our activities. The majority of the beneficiaries are women, adolescents and youth. The needs and issues addressed are unemployment, migration, poverty, illiteracy, child marriage, alcoholism, corruption, exploitation, human dignity and tribal identity.

We also focus on the education and holistic development of the Katkari tribal girls. We provide them Hostel facility. They are greatly vulnerable and neglected from main stream education system. They do not have access to information and educational avenues. The parents of these girls also do not give priority to their education.

Hence we started Hostel facility for the education of the girls in 2004. We began with 12 girls with much difficulty, because parents were not willing to send their children to the hostel. The understanding of the parents was if girls go to the hostel who will work at home. But today we have 40 girls from class 2 till 12 std. and for higher studies too. Our hostel provides not only boarding to the tribal girls but also conducive environment for their education and growth leading to their holistic development.

5. COVID 19 and NISARGA Cyclone

Last year in June, we were very badly hit by a natural calamity. The cyclone "Nisarga" that hit Konkan coast on 3rd June 2020, affected our centre very badly. Thanks to the protecting hand of God that we are safe. At that time our girls were sent home because of COVID 19 lockdown, hence they remained unharmed by the cyclone. But our centre and our poor villagers were affected very badly. Our boarding roof was completely blown off. All the staircase windows were broken. The hall built over our residence was totally damaged. The water tanks that were built for our residence and for the boarding were broken. The electric poles were broken in the town and as a result of that there was no electricity, no drinking water and no mobile network. We managed with the rain water gathered in buckets. We barely managed to communicate with whatever little connection we got.

The cyclone had totally shattered our Katkari people in villages. They have lost their houses and roofs. Their grains had got wet and spoilt. The people were already hit very badly because of COVID 19; and now the nature's fury.

I wish to share with you some pictures of our broken boarding and villages where we work. In such a situation we were living one day at a time. This was a time when we were totally dependent on God's providence and on the generosity of many kind-hearted people. We were sure that God would provide.

Amardeep Charitable Trust, is grateful to generous donors who helped us to serve the poor especially in the time of COVID-19 and Nisarga cyclone to our "Katkari" tribals. We have distributed many food kits containing items like Rice, Pulses, Tea Powder, Sugar, Oil, Potatoes, Onions, Cumin Seeds, Mustard, Turmeric Powder, Chilli Powder, Pickle etc. Many families were given tarpaulin to cover the roof and protect them from heavy rains. They were also given health kits containing pain balm, hand wash, bathing soaps, toothpaste, cotton, cipladin powder, bandage, and hair oil etc.
