Development of the Kathkaris (adivasi) through education.

Responsible NGO: Institute of Social Service , Kolad, Raigad District
Project coordinator: Ms. Prudencia Vaz
Period: 1 year (2007)
Budget: 4.500E

This organization was founded and registered in 1957. It works for social integration and the advancement of the Kathakaris, one of the most underdeveloped adivasi tribes, considered by the Government as a primitive people.

The work is based on education and aims at raising their awareness of the oppression under which they live and at motivating them to change the present situation through collective activities.

This project will be carried out in the area of Kolad, at about 130 Km south of Mumbai in the Raigad district.

The aim is to create 15 educational centres for girls and boys who live in the most remote villages of the area and who cannot attend regular schools owing to the distance. The centres will be situated in remote areas near the villages where these tribes live.

Each centre will house between 25 and 30 girls and boys, and will take in around 500 children. Education in these centres will go beyond teaching to read and write, to recognize numbers and basic operations and will encompass education for life that establishes a relation with their culture and traditions, which have often been left aside because of all kinds of pressure.

At the same time, contact will be established with the village inhabitants to involve them in the children's educational project as this will bring about positive consequences for all the village. In this sense, the project is relevant to the 6,000 inhabitants of the villages where the classrooms are built.
