NGO Responsible: Good Shepherd Convent , Karjat, Raigad District
Responsible: Sister Helen D'Souza
Duration: 3 years (2007-2009)
Amount : 41.900? for the 3 years

The Convent of Good Shepherd was constructed in April of 1967 to contribute in the integral development of 18 kathkaris (Adivasis) towns and it is legally registered.

This project includes a project destined to the Kathkari woman or Thakur; as much as to the learning process (committed for 50 children) or later in the self-subsistence stage.

After a period of time in which women has been educated throughout the formation of self-help groups (SHG), now we want to provide them with survival means so that they can begin to construct the future. The women, in addition to receive social formation that allows them to integrate them self to the society and to demand its rights, will receive a practical training for the manufacture and sale of candles, plates made with leaves and bricks. The projects focused on the generation of income have a great importance, since they allow an alternative to the traditional system of hunting and harvesting.

As a complementary experience, we will provide a goat to some of them so that they can cover their milk necessities and create excesses which the can sell. The first born baby goat will be given to another woman and so on. This will stimulate their self-esteem in seeing that they are able to provide themselves with the most indispe nsable. These actions will be exemplary for all the community and will make stronger bonds between the self-help groups of the different towns.

The boarding school will have 50 children in order to facilitate the access to the school and in where they will receive feeding and complementary formation in hygiene and other disciplines.

The direct beneficiaries are the 50 children of the boarding school and 600 women and children who will participate in the subsistence programs. The indirect beneficiaries are the 6,000 adivasis of the 18 tribal towns in where the project will be developed.

Also they will be supported on the celebration of the International woman´s day as well as in the tribal celebrations.
